Will the steel tariff shake-up halt SA’s deindustrialisation?

Tariffs are going up. Some producers will benefit handsomely, but others will bleed.

A year-long review of steel tariffs aimed at arresting the deindustrialisation of SA has been finalised, with the South African Revenue Service (Sars) last week announcing higher import duties on a wide range of steel products.

These higher steel import duties range from 10% on flat-rolled steel to 30% on certain steel fittings.
